In the story, “Fighter” by Walter Dean Myers, and throughout the story, Billy is fighting himself and life. First off, in beginning of the story it states on page 27, “Billy Gates told his wife that he was just going to the gym to work out. If he’d told her the truth, that he was going to fight again, he knew she would have cried.” I think this shows that Billy is going to fight, but he knows his wife does not want him to fight. But, he knows that he needs to fight, but not necessarily wants to fight.
In the beginning of chapter 5, the author talks about how the things that revolved around him was school and church. Outside school and church there were the endless street games on 122nd street. The block was safe to play on under the watch of housewives. Plus on page 39, Walter and his friend decided to hang Richard Aisles. Fortunately, the pastor came there and stopped the whole thing.

Walter Lord's father died when he was three years old, so he was left with his mother and his sister and then later on his mother died in 1929. The Salem Witch Trials was a series of events that took place in 1692, where innocent people were hung for apparently being witches. The people in the trials were tried in court and the girls who accused them would act like the person or people were sending spirits towards them to make the judges believe them. Giles Corey reminds me of myself by his sarcasm during conversations, always acting ornery, and the comical remarks he makes.
In the novel Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers, the main character is Richie Perry. At seventeen he graduated high school in Harlem, and he wanted to go to college, but his mother couldn’t afford to send him to college since she was an alcoholic. So he joined the army to escape his unfortunate future, but joining the army meant he had to leave his little brother Kenny, who saw him as a father figure since their father left when they were younger. Perry was sent to Vietnam and through his journey, he made lifelong bonds with many different people such as PeeWee, Monaco, and etc. Also in his journey, he suffers from mental and physical wounds.
In the beginning Walter is basically perceived as a jerk-he doesn’t seem to get along with anyone, not even his own family. His character likes to turn discussions into fights, make rude comments to his wife, and act all around immature. A part that accurately shows the way Walter conducts himself is when he is arguing with Ruth and says “Man say: I got to change my life , I'm choking to death, baby! And his woman say- Your eggs is getting cold!”
Imagine a kid having their father leave them, their mother dying when they are three years old, having a speech problem, and being a highschool dropout at the age of seventeen. Who would ever come over all of this to become successful in the real world? Walter Dean Myers would to shape himself into someone for African-American children to look up to, to show there is a way out. Writing more than one hundred books about African-Americans and Juveniles helped him be shown as an author that speaks out on equality for African Americans. His own life impacted what he wrote about and his message is there is a way out for young African-Americans.
