Amy Dell begins her chapter on reading by identifying the different emphasis put on reading throughout the grade levels. In grades K-3, students focus on "learning to read" and from 4th grade on students are taught "reading to learn." Students with reading disabilities have a tough time comprehending what the read making it difficult for them to understand textbooks and achieve academic success. Students with print disabilities must be provided with accessible instructional materials. This is a loaded definition given which basically means that textbooks and other core material must be presented in different ways, so students can choose the most effective mean for them. Meaning that all children struggle with reading in the beginning but some latch onto it quicker than others and it is important to keep all students engaged while reading. A teacher has to find appropriate books and materials whether they have a student who is falling behind or soaring ahead. Phonemic awareness was another major word mentioned in the text. This is most often the starting point, teachers will begin here with instruction on reading. This eventually leads into vocabulary, where it shows that students with smaller vocabularies are the ones who fall behind in reading. First, as an educator it is important to realize all of the different aspects that go into reading and that different students will struggle with different aspects. It will also be crucial to use repetition when introducing and furthering reading skills in my class. I cannot expect every child to pick up on the key concepts on the first day. I will have to use some of the different techniques mentioned in this book to get all of my children excited about reading.
