In chapter 1 of Discovering Our Past: The American Journey, by Glencoe, the main idea is exploration and its impact on the Americas. Clearly, exploration made a huge impact on the world by discovering new places, finding new routes, and riches. Portugal and Spain unleashed a new era of exploration by searching for sea routes to Asia by ship, Portugal mainly started the “Age of Exploration” because a sailor named Bartholomeu Dias reached the southern tip of Africa which was new land to them and a little while after, Vasco da Gama found the “long awaited” Sea route to Asia which inspired other people to sail as well. Other people had different goals while exploring the sea, like Ferdinand Magellan who was the leader of the first crew to sail around the world.
In the 1500’s and 1600’s, Europe dived into an era of exploration of new trade routes. Exploration carried out by explorers like Cortes, Diaz and Da Gama led Europe into new lands. The main motivations of these explorers were to gather spices and gold. Their countries were infatuated with the spices of Asia and with precious metals. Religion was not the main motivation for European exploration during the 15th and 16th centuries; however, the search for wealth was.
Did you know that the Age of Exploration was one of the most important times in the history of world geography? Without explorers, the world would not be as developed as it is right now, which is why explorers should be celebrated and glorified in modern times. Explorers were great navigators, they developed technology for travelling, they have also spread, introduced, and traded food, animals, and resources as well as hugely contributed to the growth of capitalism. During the Age of Exploration, technology for travelling was not developed, but explorers were great navigators and came up with genius ideas to find their way through places.
While Europeans explored disparate regions of the world they experienced the exceptionally contrasting culturing of different regions (Doc 3). Speakers, such as Thomas Babington, expressed that their culture was superior to others. Additionally, in plain light it seems like Europe would be heavily affected economically. Although Europe was positively affected, the overall impact of the economy was limited. The opportunities in other regions deflected Europe’s focus from the option of modernizing their own economy.
The Age of Exploration was a time of great expansion in the European Countries. From Africa, to North and South America, the Spanish, Dutch, English and French were all competing to find new trade routes, new commodities, and new areas to convert to their religion. The Age of Exploration had a tremendous impact on Europe, the Americas, and Africa. On one hand, Europe was able to expand widely across the world spreading their culture. On the other hand, the Americas were discovered and had their original culture changed immensely.

During this time period, European colonies were exploring the world looking for new lands to conquer and colonize. The ideology of the time was mercantilism, which meant the strength of a colony was determined by the wealth of the colony. They would export the riches they obtained in their newly colonized land and export them for profit adding to their wealth. The European colonies also tried searching for faster trade routes, or land located along them in order to increase the profit they received from trades. New lands also offered new materials to trade which could allow them to dominate the trade markets.
Exploration to the New World led to greedy rulers wanting more. There were many new resources and opportunities to make money; for example tobacco, sugar, and even minerals. Because of the demand for these crops, the Europeans needed someone to do the work. With the Native American population drastically declining, the Europeans had to find another source of labor so they turned to the African Americans. This began the slave trade where millions of slaves were taken from Africa to other areas as a source of income.
