What if what you thought and believed was true actually turned out to be false? As one of the most common and popular drinks in the world, milk has become a global icon as the beverage for maintaining good health. Parents commonly choose milk for their children thinking that the calcium and protein will help them grow and develop. Adolescent are drinking multiple cups of milk on a daily basis to achieve this goal. Although many parents accept milk as a healthy drink because of its natural and nutritional contents, there is more to it than they think. Milk has hormones, fats, and sugars that humans should not consume. Because of this, it may not be the best beverage for growing children to be drinking every day. As with all alternatives to a commodity, these substitutes have their advantages and disadvantages to cow milk; however, they ultimately do not have the negative contents cow milk has: cholesterol, high amounts of fats and sugars, harmful hormones, and lactose. Brian Krans wrote an article that outlines the pros and cons of soymilk, almond milk, and cow milk. First, almond milk, made of almonds, is low in calories and contains no saturated fat or cholesterol. Also, it is a good source of vitamin A, vitamin D, and calcium, which are often the reasons why people drink cow milk. On the other hand, almond milk does lack in protein than cow milk, and is not for those who are allergic to almonds or nuts. The second alternative is soymilk, which is made from soybeans. Similar to almond milk, soymilk has no cholesterol, is low in saturated fat, and has no lactose. Soymilk is a superb source of both protein and calcium, while still supplying vitamin A, B12, D, and potassium. These two alternatives to cow milk are excellent choices for children to provide them with the necessary nutrients, especially vitamin D, protein, and calcium.
