Elvis The novel GraceLand takes place during the 1970s and 1980s. The main character, Elvis, is a teenager who is trying to escape the problems of the slums in Nigeria. Elvis’s dream was to be an Elvis Presley impersonator, but when that did not work out, he held different jobs that may not be considered morally correct. He knew that he needed to make money in order to leave the slums, even if his jobs were corrupt. Many of the illegal activities that Elvis partook in were influenced by his friend Redemption. Another man known as the King of Beggars tries to keep Elvis on the good side and keep him from doing criminal jobs. This novel shows how poverty can lead to crime, even if someone is trying to better themselves. One particular law, known as the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act, stirred up trouble in Nigeria. Homosexuality is considered to be un-African and ‘ungodly” by Christian leaders. However, it is not something new to Africa and this new law is causing many people to be arrested tortured. One man even received twenty lashings and others receive ten to fourteen years in prison. The problem with their justice system relates to this because police officers are torturing criminals. They torture people by “shootings in the leg, foot or hand; extracting teeth, fingernails or toenails; water torture and rape” in order to extract confession or simply as punishment.
