Imperialism is defined as when one country is controlling another, and in this specific case, Europe is controlling Africa in the 19th century, impacting many people. Imperialism, is affecting both the people controlling, and the people being controlled, leaving both good and bad legacies. A legacy can be anything from what is passed down from generation to generation, what's remembered, or accomplishments. Imperialism left mostly a bad impact on Africans and mostly a good impact on the Europeans. This was most likely due to the fact that the Europeans were the ones disrupting and separating the Africans. Europe’s main goal was to gain materials and goods needed to improve themselves, to further advance Europe. They viewed Africa as a place they could could get raw materials and goods so they decided to colonize to gain these resources. Before the 1800’s, Africa was divided into hundreds of ethnic groups. From the Industrial Revolution they had more advances which allowed the Europeans to help and improve the sanitation of some of the colonies. The Europeans were also able to provide schools and hospitals to the Africans. Also, to help the economic growth of the colonies there were dams, railroads, telephones and telegraph lines were built in African colonies. While the Europeans were trying to colonize Africa, they were also able to reduce local welfare between ethnic groups.
Then for the Europeans, there was one huge positive effect. Since Europe was basically using Africa for its raw materials and labor, they were able to gain resources to help fuel Industrial Revolution. Morel wrote “Black Man’s Burden” because he saw all of the weapons being shipped out and all the goods that were coming back.
