The imperialism was a big problem to Africa and Europe during the 18th century. The Europeans wanted to take over Africa to be better and get what they needed. Imperialism was all about corruption and taking someone else’s territory or goods. The Imperialism in the Congo had many reasons and effects. Imperialism in Africa occurred because Europe wanted to expand, they wanted to increase their economy, but while doing that they caused harmful effects to Africans like the loss of culture. One of the main goals of Europe was to expand Europe, and they saw Africa as a good place to get what they wanted and to compete. This need for expansion had to do with the geography Africa had, it looked to be a place where they would get what they wanted and needed. Europe waned to take over Africa because it had benefits for them, like a way to use it for their own good. “There is the additional need to cut production costs and maximize profits by investing in countries with cheaper labor markets.” (Imperialism 101). Europe needed money and raw materials for the factories. “In 1873, a terrible economic depression struck Europe. Many people suggested that Africa could be a source of cheap raw materials for the factories while providing new customers for products manufactured in Europe” (“Colonialism in the Congo” 7), Europe had an economic depression after the Industrial revolution, which led them to take over Africa. “They saw the Third World as not only a source of raw materials and slaves but a market of manufactured goods” (“Imperialism 101”). Africa was a source for slaves, raw materials and a market for the manufactured goods, just what Europe needed.
