When a writer begins to write out the story in their minds, there is always a hidden message behind the words on the page; a theme. It is a message behind the story that that sums up the meaning of the tale in a short phrase. For example, in the fairy tale Three Little Pigs, the theme of the story is the importance of good planning and smart thinking. This theme sums up the whole story as the main characters, the 3 little pigs, did not plan or think out the construction of their houses therefore driving the story forward and spreading a message. Although this theme was fairly easy to think of, not all themes are as easy to see. How does one find the theme of a complex novel? In this essay, the theme of the novel, An Abundance Of Katherines,

For starters, on page 11 it states “Kafir, you don’t have a very complicated problem with a very simple solution” This is when Hassan suggested he and Colin should go on a road trip. Hassan was quietly struggling on what the future holds for him. He was single and didn’t want to go to college or university. He was stuck in that summer after grade 12. He wanted him and his best friend to go on a road trip for both of them to relax and clear their minds. Also, on page 71 it states “Seriously, lay off about me going to school.” This was what Hassan told Colin after Colin bugged him one too many times about not continuing his education. Before the road trip, Hassan was never bothered by anyone bugging him to go to school. Infact, he would take it humorously. But after this self reflecting road trip, the thought of school made him frustrated, as though he started thinking more seriously of the matter. Finally, on page 196, it states “I should probably register for 3 classes, it’s a hard life,Kafir.” This is when Hassan told Colin that he decided to take some school courses in the fall after much thought. This road trip made him realize that he wanted to continue his education after his new experiences on the road. Hassan discovered his true calling after this inspiring road trip that opened his eyes and mind, therefore proving that self discovery leads to new

For starters, in the text it states “From behind the counter, a girl with a long, straight nose and brown eyes the size of some lesser planets looked up from an issue of Celebrity Living magazine.” This was Colin’s first impression of Lindsey after entering her shop. Lindsey always lived the life and looked the part of an average typical girl, which she tolerated but wasn’t happy with. Although not knowing it yet, she yearned for a self discovering experience to give herself a new beginning. Then, in the text it states “The problem with chameleoning your way through life is that it gets to the point where nothing is real.” This is where Lindsey realizes that her life was too perfect and average and that she yearned for a bit of adventure. She wants to be unique and live a special unique life. FInally, in the texts it states “We could just keep going.” This is what Lindsey says to Colin at the end of the story. She discovered her true self and what she really wants to do in life. SHe found a new love and a new perspective of her future. Lindsey discovered her true self by meeting COlin and Hassan and it opened his mind, therefore proving that self discovery leads to new beginnings and help discover one 's’ true
