The delayed inciting incident in The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, occurs in chapter seven and triggers the primary conflict in the novel. After winning the ever popular kite-fighting tournament, Hassan goes missing in attempt of retrieving the last kite for Amir. Amir then hears Hassan in an alley with the neighbourhood bully, Assef. It is here where the inciting incident arises in which Amir stands by and watches Hassan being raped. The inciting incident launches a predominant man verses self-conflict in which Amir wrestles with the guilt of letting Hassan be raped.
