The family dynamic can greatly shape a child’s life. Foster parents can serve as exceptional substitutes for the birth parents. The hit sitcom “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” is a perfect portrayal of this.
This show is based on a real life situation of a foster child being transferred to another home. Uncle Phil and Aunt Viv has shown patience season after season. Will being in a new environment and home had a difficult time adjusting, even when his birthfather showed up and attempted to reclaim Will back was automatically refuted by Uncle Phil. Will was hurt by this and then asked "How come he don't want me, man?" and bursting into tears, which causes an emotional Phil to comfort him with a hug. After this episode, Uncle Phil has fully stepped up as a father figure and took his time with Will to accept him as his “father”. He treated him like a son not a job.
Foster parents have the ability to help prepare their children for the life they have coming to them. The Banks family slowly but surely influenced Will to focus more on education, responsibility and to just make the right choices.
