This is the year when the Khmer Rouge began their invasion of Cambodia under the reign Pol Pot. “In the History Place” article, we learn that Pol Pot was the leader of a Cambodian Communist group. After being forced to retreat into the jungle, he formed an armed group of rebels, called the Khmer Rouge. Pol Pot and his group then waged a war against the current leader’s movement.
Desire is the need for an object, a feeling or a person. One can have a desire for something that is essential for survival, such as water or food, but desire could be used to harm others or oneself. Through A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, Ishmael’s perspective of desire was altered dramatically. These desires were changed from his surroundings or events that were taking place. In the book, Ishmael was easily manipulated by his desires.

Jake made a painting and he wrote these words on top of his portrait, “You’re braver than you believe.” These words not only had a powerful impact on Jake, but many of the others as well. Who Was Lydia? Celeste Ng, author of the novel Everything I Never Told You, explores the dynamics of a family sodden with racial limitations, burdened with expectations, and plagued with an urge to belong. Ng, throughout the novel, seems to view the concept of being an “other” in society as a negative but necessary aspect of life and that is seemingly reflected with the Lees family. What sets the Lees apart from others is that they are a racially-diverse family and each member of the family is alienated by each other and society.
In the story, Everything Is Okay, the main character wants to make decisions that make him different from his family. He is powerless to make decisions and control as a young child; he makes choices different from what his family would make, and he wants to make his own decisions and choose how he grows up. An example of the main character being unable to make decisions as he is powerless and young is when he tells his mom that the kitten is his "and it's going to be my pet. "
The Contrast is the first play both written and performed by the newly made Americans following independence, including a host of characters that are both amusing and relatable. The show introduces the audience to two very different sorts of characters. One half of the characters, like Billy and Charlotte, are very outspoken and unreserved. While the other half are characters like Maria, who are more focused on fulfilling their duties and doing what they believe to be honorable. The Contrast never directly claims which characters are more like “true Americans,” instead, it creates a story that inclines the audience to pick sides between fun and boring, wild and good.

“Two Kinds,” by Amy Tan, essentially revolves around the struggle of Jing Mei and her constant conflict with her mother. Throughout her life, she is forced into living a life that is not hers, but rather her mom’s vision of a perfect child; because her mother lost everything, which included her parents and kids, so her only hope was through Jing Mei. Jing Mei’s mom watches TV shows such as the Ed Sullivan Show, which gives her inspiration that her daughter should be like the people and actors. First her mom saw how on the television a three-year-old boy can name all the capitals of the states and foreign countries and would even pronounce it correctly.
