Simon DeLong is just a story filler in the book “Whale Talk”. He is extremely over weight and biggest thing about his character is that he is very caring and nurturing to others. His character is mentioned very briefly in the book, but based on the things that are said in the book, a brief description can be made about Simon DeLong. In the story he is a part of the swim team, which is a group of social outcasts. This character is a big influence on the swim team at Cutter High school in the book.
Cole was beaten by him throughout his childhood. This pain and anger gave him the personality and characteristic to inflict pain on other people. The two final themes have a very strong connection. In order to heal, mentally and physically, you have to learn to forgive and receive forgiveness. This was a lesson the reader and the main character, Cole, experience throughout the book.
The relationships in Cole’s life all had a different impact on him but specifically his relationship with Peter affected him a lot. Especially the part of the book when Cole found out that Peter told on him. “‘You’re a dead man,’ he warned... He laughed when he saw fear in Peter’s eyes”(7-8). This shows the relationship at the beginning of the book and clearly it wasn’t good.
At the beginning of the novel, Cole Matthews is a vicious teenager who thinks he is superior to everyone, but is, in fact, hiding behind a shield of anger, the result of being brutally abused by his drunken father. Cole’s father, Mr. Matthews, drinks non stop until he becomes a monster, and then ruthlessly beats Cole up. When talking to Garvey, a proud, Tlingit indian, who is also his parole officer, Cole opens up about his father’s abuse saying, “‘You don’t know what it’s like being hit over and over until you’re so numb you don’t feel anything!” (Mikaelsen 28).
In the movie Simon Birch, we learn many aspects from the main character relating to our SPIES unit. The Main character Simon Birch was born the smallest baby of Grapeville in recorded history. When he was born, the doctors believed Simon would only be alive for days or a weeks at maximum, because of a undersized heart. Mr and Mrs. Birch didn’t care for Simon and carried on in their normal daily lives. Believing their son would pass away.
In “The Soft-hearted Sioux”, a Native American boy goes back home to his tribe after living at a mission school. The Sioux boy no longer connects with the people of the tribe or their culture because of his newfound belief in Christianity. As soon as he arrives, the Sioux boy finds that his father is ill. Because of his conversion to Christianity, the Sioux boy does not believe that the medicine man is healing his father and tries to guide the tribespeople away from their cultural beliefs. When the Sioux boy attempts to speak to his people about Christianity, the medicine man states, “What loyal son is he who, returning to his father’s people, wears a foreigner’s dress” (649)?
I strongly agree books can play a significant role in our lives. Using the book “Tyrell,” by Cole Booth displays how he overcame adversity he faced by standing up for himself and staying optimistic. Tyrell was an 18-year-old boy who lived in a tough neighborhood in Brooklyn and wound up joining a fierce gang called “Bone Thugs.” As part of the gang, Tyrell was on a bad path and was at risk of not graduating high school.

In the Lake of The Woods, a mystery war novel written by Tim O’Brien, whose major theme is that not every problem has a solution, but may present a different outlook on the problem and aspects surrounding it. The main character, John Wade, uses magic to hide his manipulation and deception in order to put on a smiling face on a daily basis. As a result of wanting to carry on his deceit, he ventures into the political world, while putting his wife,Kathy Wade, through misery. Kathy hated the political life style and gatherings, in this degree she was secretly relieved when he was unable to become a U.S. Senator.
The book Ghost of Spirit Bear is a sequel to the book Touching Spirit Bear. I enjoyed this book because it has a good story and plot. While this book is not as adventurous or moving as the first book Ghost of Spirit Bear still has a good plot and creates vivid pictures in your mind while reading. I prefered Touching Spirit Bear over this book because it has more adventure and a more shocking story. The book consists mainly of the same characters but more were added when Peter and Cole go to school.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving is about a man named Ichabod Crane who moves to the supernatural town of Sleepy Hollow. He moves to the town to become a teacher. He lives with the parents of the children he teaches. Ichabod also teaches singing lessons. He falls for one of his students he was giving singing lessons over.
There are several relationships that reveal about Chris's personality. “He always wore shoes without socks- just plain couldn’t stand to wear socks. But McDonald’s has a rule that employees have to wear appropriate footwear at all times. That means shoes and socks Chris would comply with the rule, but as soon as his shift was over, bang!-the first he’d do is peel those socks off. ”(40)
Charlie by, Lee Maracle is about a young Indian boy who goes to a catholic school. Charlie dreams about going outside and exploring but the school will punish him if he does. One a day a group of kids including Charlie sneak out to go to one of their families houses. When they get their Charlie leaves to go to his family’s cabin. Unfortunately his long journey is cut short by frost bite and he dies of hypothermia.
Decide how the relationship between Scout and Boo Radley evolves providing sufficient evidence In ‘To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, Scout develops a strange relationship with a mysterious character, Boo Radley. Scout, Jem, and Dill are interested in Boo Radley because of the mystery that dominates around him and the Radley house. The town people poorly judge Boo Radley and hearing stories from Miss Stephanie Crawford frightens Scout and Jem. Although the relationship starts out as fear and mystery, as time passes, Scout begins to realize that Boo isn’t the monster they described him as, he is rather a nice and caring person.
British businesswomen and singer Victoria Beckham once said, “sunglasses hide a multitude of sins…” (), this quote can be pertained to J.M. Coetzee’s antagonist character, Colonel Joll, in Waiting For The Barbarians. The colonel, who wears sunglasses largely throughout the book, is from the Third Bureau and represents an unnamed Empire. In the book Coetzee does not give the reader enough information to sketch a picture of the empire. He informs us that it is the Capital of the fort this book takes place in and that the Empire never dies. While the Empire is unnamed, it can be said that the empire is an allegory of South Africa during the apartheid because it was written during the apartheid and also that Coetzee is from South Africa.
