3885 Wednesday Wars March “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference. ”- Winston Churchill. In the novel The Wednesday Wars, by Gary D. Schmidt, the protagonist, Holling Hoodhood, has a friend named Mai Thi from a Vietnam, she is a refugee. Mrs. Bigio, a teacher from their school, Camillo Junior High, got news from the war saying her husband was supposedly dead.
The theme I chose for The Wednesday Wars is the growth of Holling. They call it The Wednesday Wars because every Wednesday Holling had to stay with his teacher that he thought did not like him and she made him work and over the year he grew in friendship with her. The reason I chose the growth of Holling as the theme is because throughout the year, Mrs. Baker helped him grow in stature and knowledge. I chose this because at the start of the book Holling was bad at running and then Mrs. Baker helped him and he grew in running. Lastly, I chose the growth of Holling is because Holling grew in friendship with Meryl Lee.
Nathaniel Philbrick, author of Bunker Hill: A City, A Siege, A Revolution, successfully enables his readers to grasp the significance behind Boston and its neighboring cities during the rise of the Revolutionary War. Not only is each occasion intimately detailed, but Philbrick records these instances in a precise and memorable rhythm. After the board meeting Kowalski and associates withdrew their model from the debate because Mr.Kowalski probably knew that he was doing the wrong thing for himself and the school board.

Holling Hoodhood in the beginning starts as a regular kid entering the seventh grade with a teacher that he think hates his guts. Holling is a presbyterian so he stays with Mrs. Baker for a while since he doesn’t go to the church's other kids go to and for this reason Mrs. Baker “Hated” him. Soon you start seeing Holling’s family neglect him and it shows how Holling has to take care of himself. Also you see Holling’s love of books when he talks about the books he reads. You then start seeing Hollings traits of paranoia about Mrs. Baker and her assassination plot.
In the book Renegades by Marissa Meyer, many things happen throughout the book that many will find interesting. This story follows two main characters, Adrian Everhart and Nova Artino/Mclain. In this world, there are these people who are prodigies with superpowers that they either inherit or are born with. There is also a Council that is made of the best superheroes or Renegades, all around the city that this book takes place in and the son of the top two Council members is Adrian Everhart with their leadership skills and the ability to make whatever he draws come to life. There are also villains in this world of heroes called the Anarchists and within these villains is the niece of the formerly ruler of Gatlon City during the Age of Anarchy.
People, sometimes are caring and helpful but often devilish and foul and we often put each other down by insulting one's ethnicity. In the novel “the Wednesday Wars” by Gary D. Schmidt Mai Thi a student at Camillo Junior High is a victim of this kind of misunderstanding. Earlier in the book the school cook, Mrs. Bigio had a husband fighting in the Vietnam war who was killed in action. She seemed to lay the blame on Mai Thi. After an “incident” involving two rats Mai Thi was teased about eating the rodents.
Society as a whole is something you make of it. If one wants to denounce the society they live in because it is “phony” that is because they’ve made the world around them phony. The character of Holden Caulfield in Catcher in the Rye is a prime example of someone being stuck in the idea that society is unchanging. Society is just how a person perceives the world in front of them. The eye of the beholder is the one that creates the society of their choice.
