294 Words2 Pages
In the novel, The Book of Three, written by Lloyd Alexander, Taran is a hero, even though he did not defeat The Horned King by himself. Taran is a hero because he is able to keep the companions together throughout their journey, and for his ability to take the blame for his wrong doings. For example, when Gurgi injured himself, he begged Taran to kill him, saying, “‘Now Gurgi’s head must be chopped off’ (Alexander 124)”, but Taran refused. Taran had compassion on Gurgi, and allowed him to ride Melyngar, knowing full well that it would slow their pace. In addition, Taran decided to continue to help the group and not stay in the valley with Medwyn. He had the opportunity to live a peaceful life, but he knew that his mission was more important.
