The Blonde Bombshell “When it comes down to it, I let them think what they want, and if they care enough to bother with what I’m doing, then I’m already better than them.” (marilynmonroe.com), as once said by the classic and beautiful Marilyn Monroe. She changed the way that we look at ourselves, but most importantly, she changed the way we view life and how we view the world. Marilyn is best known as being the most famous “sex symbol” of the early 1960s. But how did that change society? Well, she had stretch marks on her thighs, she wasn’t what the media considered “thin”, she didn’t have smooth skin, and she wasn’t tan or toned. Despite not having the “perfect” body, men and women all across America loved her. They loved her confidence and her carefree attitude. This changed America’s society because we learned that you didn’t have to have the thinnest physique or the face with the most caked up makeup on to be loved and appreciated. Besides being a non-conformist to the ideal American body, Marilyn changed the way how women dressed. Before Marilyn made a change, women wore clothing that covered every inch of their skin. Many people today didn’t know that Marilyn was a women’s rights activist and a feminist. The author of Passion and The Paradox, Lois Banner, says that “the popular perception is that she was abused by men, both personally and professionally.” Because of her rough childhood and abused background, Marilyn changed how men treat women, and vice versa. She also helped give women rights with her quotes like “Look like a girl, act like a lady, think like a man, and work like a boss.” and “Women who seek to be equal with men lack ambition.” Her quotes like these and the actions that she took for the women’s right movement is what changed the minds of men and women all across
