Ashleigh can either steal from her mother and make her dad happy, or do nothing and disappoint her father. Ashleigh’s parents are divorced and she is forced to decide whether to obey her father or mother. Her dad calls her Ashes, but her mom doesn’t like the nickname and that is what lead to the divorce. Ashleigh stole the money from her mother because her father talks to her more, her dad believes in her ideas, and she does not want to let her dad down. Ashleigh’s dad talks to her more than her mom. He took her out to a diner to talk to her and spend time with her. Ashleigh’s dad taking her out to a diner shows that he cares for her more and her mom didn’t spend much time with her. In the text, on page one, Ashleigh thinks about her mom, “she just called me Ashleigh--a name she didn’t even like--and never promised me anything.” Since Ashleigh’s mom doesn’t promise her anything, that means that she doesn’t talk to Ashleigh because you have to talk to someone to promise them something. Ashleigh’s dad believes that dreams will someday come true. She wants her dad's dreams to come true, so she stole the money to try to make her father’s dreams come true. An example from the text. on page two, from Ashleigh’s thoughts is “Last week he told me to be an astronaut. The week before that, the CEO of a Fortune 500.” This shows that Ashleigh’s dad wants her to be able to go far in life. He wants her to do great things and he will support her along the way. The reason Ashleigh’s father needs the money is to pay off a deal he made. After he pays the money he will be able to get a job and support Ashleigh. She knows this so she will steal the money so later she can have a better
