Character development in to kill a mockingbird Harper Lee. To Kill a Mockingbird (Enhanced Edition) Harper Collins, 2014 “To kill a mocking bird” is a novel primarily on development and growth. The story in the novel covers a period of three years in which the three main characters underwent significant developmental changes. The two characters, Jem and Scout live with their father, Atticus in Maycomb town. Scout is a tomboy who tries to understand the world that demands her to behave like a girl. Her brother mocks her on the same but her father accepts her the way she is. Just like the development process of many children, the two children underwent dramatic changes during the three year period. Unlike others, they had to cope up with very many challenges that they faced and as a result, they learnt life time lessons from their experiences. At the beginning of the novel, they are immature and mock the lonely life of Boo. Boo was their neighbor and never came out and as a result there were rumors about him which the kids believed and often mocked him. Boo secretly gave gifts to them and eventually saved their lives. This experience changed their perspective of Boo and respected him as a human being. They also learnt that they should not believe every rumor they hear. Courage is another theme brought out in the development of Jem and Scout. The two children thought courage was only manifested through physical abilities but then they learnt that it can take many forms. This happened when their father decided to take up a case and with their experience with Mrs. Henry who had the courage to kick off her addiction to morphine before her death.
