In the first two acts of The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice, Othello was portrayed as a strong, noble, and stable leader who has experienced much success in his position as general of the Venetian army. However, as his expectations changed because of his elopement with Desdemona, the audience is shown a new side of Othello, a side that is anything but strong or stable. It can be argued that Othello’s tragedy is a direct result of a number of characters flaws spurred on by his outpour of love for Desdemona. Whether it be his jealousy, lack of trust, naivety, or rage each of these flaws stemmed from one common descent, his cultural otherness which lies at the center of his tragedy.
