ANALYSIS OF INCE MEMED 1
İnce Memed I which is the first edition of the novel written by Yaşar Kemal and published in 1955. The book argues social stratifications and structure of the people who lived during the early years of republic era. The characters of İnce Memed 1 are Abdi Ağa, Hatçe, Döne, Suleyman, Sergeant Recep, Cabbar, Ali the Lame, Iraz and Ali Safa. The story takes place in Çukurova region, southern Anatolia. This book clearly demonstrates us Anatolian people’s ignorance, the dominance of landowners over peasants and misery of village life. Yaşar Kemal also emphasizes the social stratification, family relations, gender issues and inequality, and lastly the change in society.
The book, initially, shows how did İnce Memed become a bandit and how did he live. Banditry was a bad act for everyone who wants to live in peace, in their minds the bandits were evil people. The main character İnce Memed becomes a bandit to prevent the tyranny of owners of their lands. The story argues family issues and strong connection between family members. It also mention that how family members are dealing with problems. For instance, when İnce Memed left the village, he could not stop thinking of his mother because he left his mother behind as well, so he felt guilty. The reason for his returning to village is that land owner Abdi Ağa murders his mother. Memed is very angry with him so he vow to take the revenge. Another mother-son relationship is that Iraz the woman who meet with Hatçe in prison, she is imprisoned because her son is murdered and after that, she burnt up the house that belongs to murderers of his son.
