During the darkest ages of Rome, arose a leader that would forever change the ways of the Roman Empire. The leader’s name was Charlemagne, known as “The Holy Barbarian.” When Charlemagne took charge, he brought law, order, and Christianity to the people. This gave them hope and something bigger than them to believe in. As Charlemagne used many unique tactics to expand and bring together the Roman Empire. At the same time, he spread Christianity. Under Charlemagne's ruling, the Holy Roman Empire had many accomplishments that improved the lives of many. Germanic Tribes began to take over Western Europe. (Cooper, 2017) The Roman Empire fell due to an unstable government that lead to a weak military. The Germanic Tribes used this to their advantage. By the year 700, Western Europe turned into an empire under the rulers Charles Martel, and his son Pepin the Short. (Cooper,2017) Much later, Pepin the Short died in 768. (Cooper, 2017) After his death, his brother, Carolman, inherited half of his empire along. The other half was left to his son, Charlemagne. When Carloman died in 771, this left the rest of the empire to Charlemagne. (Cooper, 2017) Charlemagne became the only ruler of the franks at this time. Within 43 years of his dedicated ruling, Charlemagne was able to expand his entire empire and convert all his citizens to Christianity. (Cooper, 2017) Christianity became the only religion of his empire. Leaving churches and the religion at the center of every citizen's life. On Christmas Day in the year 800, Pope Leo III pronounced Charlemagne the official emperor of Western Europe. (Cooper, 2017) Charlemagne continued to proudly rule the empire until his death. The franks would have faced the danger of possible being taken over by another region, such as the Saxons. Christianity would not be what it is today. Due to Charlemagne’s dedicated force to the religion, he was able to spread it throughout the Holy Roman Empire and preserve Christianity. If Charlemagne was not in charge, the Roman Empire would not have been as big or united as we know it in history to be. With his constant need for warfare, he was able to unite all germanic tribes, that crossed his path, under one empire. The government would also not have been the feudal, yet organized and strict, as it was. Saying this, there might not have been a complete and stable government. The stable government was used to keep citizens peaceful and safe. Finally, the military accomplishments would have not have been as significant as they were if the history of Europe was different. In the end, Charlemagne was a critical part of the achievements of the Holy Roman
