Why do people have a problem with gay marriage? It is not all people who have a problem with gay marriage, but there are those who believe that gay marriage is an abomination and goes against God. Others however, believe that people are just people, and it does not matter if you are gay or not. Charles Colson believes that gay marriage is the end of the tradition of marriage; especially if gay couples are able to adopt children. Katha Pollitt however, believes that it does not matter if a couple is gay, straight, or elderly; as long as they are happy together and love one another. Regardless of the personal point of view, Katha Pollitt’s essay holds more weight than Charles Colson, in my opinion. The reason for this is the lack of validation provided by Charles Colson. Colson states “The family, led by a married mother and father, is the best available structure for both child rearing and cultural health” (Colson, page 578). Says who? How is a non-heterosexual couple any less capable of raising a child? Not to mention, all the single parents out there due to either divorce or became widowed. A stable and loving environment is what a child needs, not for people to place a label on his or her parents. Colson does not mention nor take into account all of the heterosexual couples that leave their child in the car when it’s either freezing or scorching hot out and they die. Nor does Colson mention the number of heterosexual couples who abandon their child in the most despicable ways. It is like the old saying goes, “anyone can be a mother or father, but it takes a real woman or man to be a mommy or daddy”.
