David Montgomery, "The 'New Unionism ' and the Transformation of Workers ' Consciousness in America, 1909-22," Journal of Social History, Vol. 7, No. 4 (Summer, 1974): pp. 509-529 The “New Unionism” and the Transformation of Worker’s Consciousness in America, 1909-22 by David Montgomery, analyzes the attitude changes with blue-collar workers and the events that took place that caused the changes. The question that the author is attempting to answer is “Why did the working class perception change and how did employers respond to the working class demands?” Montgomery argues that the new vision of the working class is to control and manage industries, which caused employers to create new management initiatives.
In his article “The Federal Constitution and the Defects of The Confederation”, Max Farrand delves back into the 1700s in order to examine the creation of the Constitution and even moreso the reasons behind its inception. The Constitutional Convention was a very interesting event that has always had some historical mystery and even some common ignorance around what happened at the convention. As a way to inform the people reading this articles of the intentions of the convention, Farrand formulates his thesis around this idea of how and why the Constitution was made. On the first page of his article, he states, “That the Constitution was framed because of the defects in the Articles of Confederation is universally accepted, but it does not
Mary Louise Roberts in “The Price of Discretion: Prostitution, Venereal Disease, and the American Military in France, 1944-1946” discusses what American GIs did in France with regard to sexual relations, and Roberts criticizes American hypocrisy by having self-contradictory (double-standard) attitudes toward sex. Jeffrey Burds in “Sexual Violence in Europe in World War II, 1939-1945” points out the sexual brutality during World War II conducted by both German Soldiers and Soviet Soldiers. Roberts discusses the relationship among prostitution, venereal diseases, and the U.S. army in France. Generally, when a government gains some control, they take advantage of the control given and go too far. When control is taken too far it can influence the citizens to want to rebel against the government to often gain their own freedom. In the book, Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, the government takes so much control to prevent conflicts and to maintain social order, but it causes some citizens to rebel and desire individual freedom.

Oswald’s resentment toward authority was his most prominent motivation to murder the President. He demonstrated this resentment for various times in his life. For instance, Palmer McBride, a man Oswald met in the 1950s revealed that Oswald disclosed to him about shooting President Eisenhower for exploiting the American working class. In addition, nine month prior to his assassination of President Kennedy, he also attempted to assassinate Major General Edwin A. Walker upon the belief that the major general was a fascist leader. Furthermore, at 1:15pm on the day President Kennedy was assassinated, Oswald resisted the arrest from Dallas Police Officer Tippit, which caused him to kill Tippit.
On Tyranny Timothy Snyder wrote a book called “On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century,” mainly to inform Americans on how to withstand from the rise of tyranny in America today. He starts the book off with an opening line, “history does not repeat, but it does instruct” (Snyder 6). In reference to the opening line, readers will learn how to prevent the fall of democracy, along with overcoming the rise of tyranny through ‘twenty lessons’ based on the mistakes made in the twentieth century. These historical lessons are mostly taken from European’s history of fascism, communism, and Nazism. As an expert in European history, the author, Timothy Snyder uses examples based on the Soviet Union and the German Nazis to show how “history can familiarize, and it can warn” (Snyder 7).
Meadow Neubauer-Keyes Kozak 2nd Hour - Prompt 1 19 April 2023 Graded Essay #3 Authority and power are some of the most abused concepts in any society, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, by Ken Kesey exhibits this dynamic flawlessly. Kesey portrays a microcosm of American society in a mental institution led by a woman called Nurse Ratched. The administration of the mental institution manipulates the population of the hospital into subordination. Through the lens of a schizophrenic man with a warped sense of reality and his perception of a feisty peer, Kesey communicates the necessity of confrontation and rebellion when there is injustice and the consequences of blind acceptance of biased and ill-intentioned authority.
In the Gilded Age, the division of power was more prominent than ever. It caused people of lower wealth to suffer financially and physically, leading to a harmful, stagnant society. Because of the low-paying jobs that were offered only to the people of the lower class, it made it financially impossible for the “poor” to elevate into the middle and upper classes. As depicted in the political cartoon titled “ The Protectors of Our Industries”, “cloth workers averaged $9 a week, linen workers averaged $11 a week, and lumber workers averaged $6 a week, all while providing for their families, who in relation to the rich had more people to take in account for.

George Orwell’s 1984 has resonated with many who have experienced first-hand what life is like under a dictator. The novel describes how everything is controlled and monitored by the government and how even mere thoughts can be detected by ThoughtPolice. Readers get to experience Oceania’s system of ruling through the eyes of an Outer Party member, Winston Smith. At first, Winston is adamant to destroy The Party and its figurative leader Big Brother, but eventually is captured and converted into a lover of Oceania’s system of government. Children, although not playing a significant role in this book, are mentioned as devious little spies.
