Scrooge’s Outlook on Charity for the Less Fortunate In the book A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, Scrooge’s look on charity for the poor is that he has his own business and that he should not get into other people 's business, meaning that he thinks that the city would be better off without all of the poor people, and that all the less fortunate people can either work at union house or live in debtors prison. First when the men come into shop and ask for money to give to the poverty-stricken. Scrooge responds by saying “ ‘Are there no prisons?’
This is prominently shown in one paragraphs 63 and 64 “Portly Man: But sir Mr. Scrooge…think of the poor. Scrooge: Take your leave from my office, sir, while I'm still smiling.” This demonstrates Scrooge as a selfish person because he is stingy with his money even to the less fortunate. In addition to the previous quote In Act one Paragraph 10. “ Scrooge: If I could work my will, every idiot who goes about with “Merry Christmas” on his lips, should be boiled on his own pudding and buried with a stake of holly through his heart.”
At the beginning of the novella, Scrooge is presented as selfish and stingy because he simply does not understand the poor and the struggles they go through as he is only focused on his materialistic needs and views the poor as the “surplus population”. In stave 1, he is described as a 7 negative adjective, for example “squeezing and wrenching” which has connotations of struggling as scrooge struggles to assimilate with society and doesn't understand that the poor often lead very hard lives due to people like scrooge (especially businessmen) who don’t donate to charity, treat their workers horribly and belittle the poor. Scrooge is presented as one who is too focused on his selfish gains through his love for money, completely forgetting to
What reason do you have to be merry? you're poor enough!” This shows how rude Scrooge is to those he finds below him. All in all, with the quotes provided one can see how horrible Scrooge treats those around him.
Looking from the start of "A Christmas Carol", which I will call from now on "the book", Scrooge is described in the worst way a human could be described. Dickens' fantastic descriptions drew an image of a sharp, misanthropic, covetous old miser. His greed for wealth and his superb selfishness made him stand out like a goose in a queue of ducks compared to the charity men's benevolence and his comely nephew's good heart. as "the book" describes, Scrooge is a "tightfisted hand at the grindstone...hard and sharp as flint, solitary as an oyster. "(page 12), highlighting his selfishness and hostility.
And anyone who tries too, like Scrooge's nephew, gets pushed away and ignored by Scrooge. Charles Dickens is showing how, in the Victorian Era, many of the wealthy lived their
He lived a life filled with so much greed and selfishness that he did not care about others nor was he generous. However, even though Scrooge was greedy there were still others who showed generosity
In "A Christmas Carol," Charles Dickens uses the characters of Ignorance and Want to evoke a sense of empathy and compassion and also educate the audience. These characters symbolize the societal issue of poverty. When Ignorance and Want are revealed to Scrooge by the Ghost of Christmas Present he says, "Have they no refuge or resource?... Are there no prisons? said the Spirit, turning on him for the last time with his own words”(Dickens).
Although skeptical in the beginning, Scrooge begins to understand why he must change his ways, and he discovers what he can do to become a better person. Throughout most of the first chapter, Scrooge is very greedy. When two kind men come and ask Scrooge for a small donation to help benefit the poor Scrooge asks if any of the prisons or poorhouses are still in operation, and the men tell him: “Many can’t go there; and many would rather die.” To which Scrooge replies with: “If they rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.” Scrooge was already being greedy by not giving money to the men, but he was also being extremely rude by saying people should hurry up and die.
"When I pay a days wages for no work". Scrooge said this while talking about christmas to the clerk who asked if he could have christmas day off, to which Scrooge said no. Scrooge 's attitude to the poor is based on the common stereotype; poor people are always begging for money, which isn 't always true but Scrooge believed it. In the Victorian era, many Victorians had the same attitudes as Scrooge to the poor, they both disliked them as they always "begged for money" or made a show of their un-wealthy-ness and it made others feel sympathetic enough to donate them money and Scrooge disliked this.
In the beginning of the story, Scrooge was a lonely greedy man. He also hated Christmas and didn’t like other people. One quote that shows that Scrooge was greedy is, “What

Charles Dickens argues in his writing A Christmas Carol that the poor was being treated cruelly and the rich does not care for the poor. Pg 34 “We should make some slight provisions for the poor and destitute, who suffer greatly at this present time”. This statement shows that the poor and destitute were not provided with anything and they suffered a lot. ”If they would rather die they better do it, and decrease the surplus population”.
Improving our transport, flourishing our city - Sustainability of Gold Coast transport strategies Introduction Increasing environmental concerns and issues have been bringing the concept of urban sustainable development, especially sustainable transport system, to the agenda of the majority cities worldwide. Traditionally, sustainable transport refers to developing a serious of transport strategies which could cater to the demands of a city’s citizens and tourists, and reach a balance of social, economic and environmental qualities between the current and future as well. Gold Coast is one of the most rapidly growing cities in Australia. According to the City Council of Gold Coast, ‘The Estimated Resident Population for 2014 is 546,067’ and the population will continually growing in the future. Additionally, Gold Coast is a tourism city, which welcomes 12 million visitors each year.
In page 13 Dickens sets up a scene in which two gentlemen come visit Scrooge seeking charitable help for the poor but Scrooge refuses to help and says; “If they would rather die,” said Scrooge, “they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.” meaning that if people would rather die than join the institutions he supports then they should. In this passage we learn that Scrooge is a very cold man, and a man unwilling to help. The effect of revealing the character traits indirectly is that it brings up examples of ones personality at play, like Scrooge actively showing how self contained he is and how he has a cold hearted personality by not helping
