Have you ever had brain surgery before? Well a guy named Charlie Gordon has. Sadly some things go very bad in his life during the surgery effects that changes his and his friends life forever. In Daniel Keyes´ science fiction novel ¨Flower for Algernon¨ a 37 year old man is picked for an experiment The scientist that picked him thought that his I.Q. of 68, could be TRIPLED! Charlie Gordon is a little mentally disabled, but is picked for a surgery that will not only upgrade his intelligence 3x, but changed his life and the world around him. What do you the reader think? Yes or no to the surgery? I thought no too. The reasons why is that Charlie lost his job, became forgetful, and most of all, had thoughts of suicide. After the Artification Intelligence surgery or (A.I.) effects wore off, Charlie became forgetful. Enough to forget what he just learned. In his words he said ¨ I´m forgetting that i just learned recently. It seems to be following the classic patterns- the last things learned are the first the first things forgotten.¨ (keyes, 241). Get ready for the saddest and most hurtful reason why charlie shouldn't of had the surgery is… Charlie had thoughts of suicide and A LOT of depression. The bad part about thing about it is no one would really care that he would die.Probably not even his mom. The good part about that sentence is that he doesn't die from suicide. Opponents may say that Charlie finally had a purpose in life. What´s supporting that is a boy in a restaurant that smashes dishes (also mentally disabled) and people that are laughing and teasing him. Charlie was laughing, until he realized that he was once one of those people. Then he made a big scene that got him abnormally angered. Then he left and as he left he realized that he´s a reason in life. If Charlie wouldn't of had the surgery he wouldn't of made a scene. That proves that Charlie shouldn't of had the
