The complicated structure of social rank among bears in the massive forests of Bearlandia is a distinctive problem. Appearances play a significant role in this active community of furry individuals; they determine a bear's position in the social order and influence interactions amongst bears who have different physical characteristics. Charlie, a medium sized black bear, has a hard time fitting in with this complicated community. He struggles with his day-to-day life due to the fact that he’s not like everyone else. However, somewhere along the line he finds his way, with the help of his new friend Teddy. The Grizzlies, with their massive appearance, are the most powerful bears in the social order. How could he ever compete with the gigantic sized Grizzlies who overrun everything? This left Charlie with no hope, and no motivation to do anything with his life. He felt alone, scared, and as if he wasn’t important to the the bear community. He needed a friend, someone who understood him in ways that the Grizzlies couldn’t. One day, Charlie was searching the waters of Bearlandia to find fish to eat. When he approached the river, he saw that the Grizzlies were on the opposite side of the lake from where he was. He tried to run before they saw him, but it was too late. “What are you doing over here, you tiny, useless bear?” said Jack, the leader of the Grizzlies. Charlie was never really good at his words. He tried to say something back to him and stand up for himself, but his fear got the best of him. He couldn’t form words, leaving the Grizzlies mad with no answer. “Are you gonna say anything punk, or are you going to run away and hide because you have no friends?”. As soon as those words left Jack’s mouth, a strange creature, named Teddy, came from behind the trees and said “He has come to gather food just like the rest of you”. His confidence is what led the Grizzlies to leave Charlie alone. After hearing these words, Charlie felt a sense of relief and clarity, knowing that someone was there with him. He didn’t have to experience this obstacle alone, he had found a new friend. “Who are you?” Charlie asked with the biggest smile on his face. “I am Teddy the great black bear”. You really shouldn’t let those Grizzlies treat you that way.” responded Teddy, sounding very concerned for Charlie’s well being. “I know, but I’m not good with my words and I’ve never had anyone to help me through these situations in order to learn from it.” said Charlie. Teddy felt sorrow for Charlie, because no one should have to face difficult obstacles by themselves. That’s why I’m here. I have to come to be your partner in crime, and help you with problems that you can’t face by yourself.” This gave joy to Charlie, for he had never had a real friend before. He never had a person he could rely on, or a person to support him in his day-to-day life. Having a friend gives Charlie the sense of comfort.
