Charlie’s Surgery Benefited Him Charlie started off as a 37 year old man with no bright future ahead of him. Everyday he worked at a factory, as a janitor. He strove for greater knowledge. He enrolled himself in night school, hoping to learn. When Charlie was picked for a surgery to triple his IQ, having an IQ of 68, he was excited. Charlie received intelligence in an unnatural way, and because of that his brain could not hold all the information for long and after a bit intelligence started rapidly decreasing. Even though there were downsides to the surgery, Charlie made the right decision having the surgery, because it was an important experience, he gave purpose to his life, and after it all he still sustains hope for a better life. Charlies’s life after the surgery was an important experience for him. and somethings he enjoyed were not accessible to him before. In his progress report he communicates a goodbye to Miss Kinnian, he writes,”If you ever reed this Miss Kinnian dont be sorry for me Im glad I got a second chanse to be smart becaus I lerned a lot of things that I …show more content…

When CHarlie starts reflecting on his accomplishments after the surgery, he writes in his progress report, “Anyway I bet IM the first dumb person in the world who ever found out something importent for sience[sic].”(Keyes 28) Charlie’s life was not special. he was 37, stuck in a dead end job as a janitor, and didn’t really have much to look forward to. The surgery changed his dull life. It gave him a chance to understand complex concepts, to love, and most of all to do something meaningful with his life. CHarlie contributed to science in ways no smart man could. He left a legacy and elevated the field of science to new horizons that would not have been possible without his commitment to the process and ambition for knowledge.
