Othello Othello is a story written by William Shakespeare about love, murder, and jealousy. Othello fits into the overall theme of women rights, because of the marriage of Desdemona and Othello. The two fall in love with each other, but Desdemona’s father does not approve of the marriage. He then accuses him of witchcraft and stealing his daughter in front of the senate. This fits into the overall theme, because he is saying that there is no way that his daughter could think for herself and love this man. She had to of been tricked. Desdemona then breaks in and proclaims that she has fallen in love with Othello and that her allegiance is with him now and not with her father. Brabanzio, the father, believed that because his daughter was a girl that she had to have gotten tricked by the Moor. She could not have had the capability to think for herself, because she was a women.

This story touches on both of the major points from the introduction. The first point is that of the suppression of women. In the story, John keeps his wife at home and does not let her expand of her knowledge of anything outside of the house. This keeps her in a childish state of ignorance where she could remain a second class citizen. John consistently patronizes and dominates his wife in order to “help her”. This gives off the idea that he does not believe that she could think for herself. The second point is that of what was normal for the time period of the work. The women was supposed to stay home while the man went to work; and anything other than that was not
