In chapter 11 of Chasing Lincoln’s Killer by James Swanson, John Garrett is heroic and David Herold is cowardly. When after the 16th New York Cavalry arrived at the Garrett farm, Baker orders John Garrett to go in the tobacco barn and get out Booth: “Baker explained the mission was not optional. If he did not go in the barn, Baker would burn all the Garrett property…half guided, half pushed him through the door and closed it”(166-167).
