Child birth is a very critical event in a women's life, and for her family as well. Imagine having to give birth to a child inside a lobby or waiting area. It's a horrible thought, but unfortunately this is a very real scenario that many underprivileged women in this world have to face. I have witnessed, first-hand, pregnant women giving birth in waiting areas while waiting to be attended by a physician. While I was working as a surveillance officer at Paropakar Maternity Hospital, a central government hospital for obstetrics and gynecology, I had the opportunity to see with my own eyes the dire state of maternal health conditions in my country. I was involved in a Perinatal Mortality Study being conducted in the hospital, which mainly focused on assessing the impact of a simplified neonatal resuscitation protocol provided by HBB (Helping Babies Breathe) in a tertiary hospital. I have lost many close family members to ailments which could have been prevented or at least treated if given the proper medical attention. It costs a lifetime of savings to treat ailing family members, and unfortunately most these expenses come directly out of the family’s pocket. I strongly believe that if the health sector is better funded, better equipped and better managed with clear and effective policies, the health and wellness index of the Nepali people would rise substantially. With my experience of being a health care professional and working at the hospital for 2 years, I want to pursue further studies in public health. Through proper interventions, planning and implementation of effective policies, I anticipate being able to bring about much-needed change through my work. My passion, academic ability will contribute to the student body and graduate Public Health
