Introduction to child observation and in context: For this observation the observer, observed a four year old girl named, Amber. Amber is a smart and energetic little girl, who always loves to show off her vast knowledge. According to her mother, she is attending preschool Monday through Friday. By now Amber is already able to recite the alphabet. The observer was able to observe Amber for about 2 hours. She was able to observe some of her evening routines, such as dinner and playtime before bath time. Amber was excited to see the observer again, that she gave the observer a big hug when she arrived. While playing games, Amber has a tendency of smiling and thrusting her arm up when she accomplishes something a task in the game. She also use words along with gestures to enhance her meaning. For example, when it was the observer’s turn to play the game, she would point at obstacles on the screen the observer should avoid, while saying “watch out”. When her mom came into the room and asked her if her phone rang while she was out of the room, she shook her head. Also when she was requesting more dessert she pointed at her empty bowl. According to her mom, whenever Amber reads she tends to point at the words in the book. Pragmatic Skills: Amber displays normal pragmatic skills for a 4 year old. Whenever she has a conversation with her mom or the observer she maintains normal eye contact. She doesn’t talk over people and acknowledges their part of the conversation, so she uses turn-taking appropriately. When the observer and Amber sat down together and read Bark, George the observer asked “Who says meow?” Amber answered “Cats.” Then the observer asked what types of noise should George make? Amber replied “He’s a dog. Dogs go arf arf.” She replied appropriately to the conversation and she did a good job staying on
