After coming home drunk, it is possible that the narrator already had a desire to hurt the cat and being under the influence he had the courage to do so. Strangely, in this paragraph he contradicts himself by first stating that he desires the cat avoided his presence, yet the narrator then seized the cat. Which gives the reader the idea that he may have split personalities. With the history that is known of him and the cat, the narrator did have good memories with it, so it would make sense that he still cared for the cat. Because of this, it would make sense that he wanted to avoid the cat because he did not want to hurt it.
