Stigma Management of the Childless Analysis For individuals or couples who choose to remain childless, they often are faced with negative stereotypes and pressures to not only raise children, but to also live up to the typical societal norms. In 2002, researcher Kristin Park examined how these individuals managed the stigmas they are faced with by identifying themes within qualitative interviews. In the following pages, this essay will go on to discuss some of the relevant literature in the various areas of childless couples and individuals. According to the research, individuals who were voluntarily childless were often seen as less socially desirable, less adjusted to life, and even less nurturant. In addition, they were also seen to be more paternalistic, selfish, individualistic, and career oriented more so than those individuals who chose to have children (p. 24). Although stereotypes can often be present for the childless, other research could argue otherwise. In a 1983 study, research indicated that undergraduate students who were childless were often never stereotyped, and those women who were intentionally childless were evaluated slightly less positive than a happy pregnant women. This is potentially due to the fact that individuals in college are often seen as trying to get ahead in life, and having a child during this time might not be the best idea for a person or a …show more content…

One way the study could be improved is by examining the different types of social pressure and stigma that many childless individuals have to face. By learning more about these motivations, researchers can develop ways in which these individuals can gain a better understanding and be more educated. In addition, future research could also expand by including different races within the study.
