The article I chose to write about is called Chimpanzees Can Vary Smiles like Humans. Humans have long been communicating through facial expressions. Whether happy or sad, a person’s facial expression can tell you a lot about how they are feeling. Our relatives, chimpanzees, have been studied in a variety of ways, because human and chimp DNA varies by just over 1%. A new study published in the journal PLoS ONE, from the University College of London, states that chimpanzees also have the ability to smile like humans when we laugh. Human can smile with or without laughing and talking, and the study concluded that chimpanzees can also smile silently. During the experiment, the scientists saw that chimpanzees were able to produce 14 open mouthed facial expressions. The …show more content…

Although chimpanzees and humans are closely related, specifically 99% of our DNA is the same; humans do not look like chimpanzees. This is because when DNA is being synthesized in a eukaryotic cell, during RNA processing, our junk DNA is cut out. This happens so that the ribosome can’t read the DNA section that codes for making a chimpanzee. However, even though the junk DNA is cut out, it is kept in case humans need to evolve in the future. This is a key part of evolution. I found this article extremely interesting, because I think that evolution is very fascinating. It was also interesting for me to learn that chimpanzees are so closely related to us, to the point that they also share the same ability to smile. Furthermore, it was fascinating to learn that scientists are studying chimpanzees so closely, with the newest technology. I would love to know more about the other animals that humans are closely related to, and how. I think that this would be interesting to know, because humans can study and begin to uncover more and more information about evolution. This information could also help us learn how different species might evolve in the
