Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to determine the molecular weight of a vapor based on the mass of the vapor at a specific temperature, pressure, and volume, and then identify the substance from a group of six possible unknowns.
Methods: First, a 500 mL beaker was filled with water and boiling chips and was heated on a hot plate until it boiled. Then, a 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask, piece of aluminum foil, and a rubber band were massed together. 2 mL of the unknown substance were poured into the flask. Next, the aluminum foil was wrapped around the opening of the flask, secured with a rubber band, and any excess foil below the rubber band was folded up to prevent any water from getting trapped. A small hole was poked in the center of the …show more content…

The reason that the 2mL trial and the 5mL trial did not produce the same results is the 2mL trial of the unknown did not produce enough vapor to completely fill the flask. The 5mL sample produced a closer answer to the actual substance because it produced enough vapor to saturate the flask and force all the air out. The amount of substance in the flask should only affect the experimental molecular weight when the amount of substance cannot produce enough vapor to fill the dead space in the flask. The main error that occurred was 2mL didn’t produce enough vapor to fill the flask, meaning that the flask wasn’t completely saturated with the unknown substance. Therefore, the volume of the vapor cannot be known because the flask contains a mixture of vapor and air in unknown proportions. This resulted in a larger value for the volume of the vapor being used in the equation than what was actually present, and this caused the calculated molecular weight to decrease. Another error that have occurred was water could’ve gotten caught between the aluminum and the flask. This would’ve caused the final mass of the flask to increase, resulting in a higher molecular
