The essence of great poetry lies with the author’s ability to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. Most poets use universal themes to connect their audience through emotion and experience, making the written theme relatable. But it is only when combined with the use of carefully placed literary techniques that this connection is enhanced and the work transforms from simple words on paper to an art form. Gwen Harwood uses a number of her poems to connect us with the universal journey from childhood innocence to experience and adulthood. Harwood also weaves the idea of memory into her writing, as a way to trigger emotion through a connection to the past, a connection to feelings that transcend through time.
In chapter two, "Trusted Friends", Schlosser points out some of Ray Kroc 's marketing strategies. Instead of telling people he was in the restaurant business, he claimes he was in the show business. These strategies were targeted towards children, which was a booming industry during this time. Therefore Ronald McDonald was created. He and Mickey Mouse soon became rivals, even though they were a part of different industries.

Friendship is a wonderful yet confusing thing. This concept is brilliantly displayed in Chaim Potok’s The Chosen. In the book, the main character, Reuven, and Danny Saunders become friends through an interesting turn of events during a baseball game, the short version being that Danny ended up putting Reuven in the hospital with a baseball in the eye. After Reuven gets over some feelings of bitterness towards Danny, the two grow to be great friends. There are many difficulties when it comes to friendship, but the beauty of a good friendship is that good friends can power through them.
The poem continues with, “We lurk late,” “We strike straight,” “We Sing sin,” “We Thin gin,” which all showcase the boys disinterest in education, lack of mental growth and pleasure in their street lifestyle. Drinking alcohol, staying out late and having sex are the only things that make up their reality. The boys are living a carefree life and do not want to be bothered by school or education.

Ruiz’s childhood friend Valdes traveled to the United States together and settled down near one another. Valdes lives a well-off life in the Caucasian community as a Cuban. On the other hand, Ruiz identify himself as Cuban, yet, whites see him simply as black.
We Real Cool Teenage dropouts has been one of the most problematic conflicts in the United States. This unreasonable act has disastrous effects. In the poem “We Real Cool”, Gwendolyn Brooks utilizes repetition to emphasize the consequences of discontinuing school.

Within every character, in every scene, on either side of town, important lessons can be learned to turn the community around. In The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, several roles portrayed could use some lessons being depicted in the poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay” written by Robert Frost. Tough hoods on the East Side of town and the snobs of the West Side, also known as Greasers and Socs have very different stories but could learn a lot from each other if they were willing to put aside their differences. “Nothing Gold Can Stay” is all about the diminishing of the gold soul you had the chance to keep. Friendship can be a key element or theme to a work of literature. Friendships can be expressed in different ways throughout their story. Most stories express friendships as a high and low in one’s life. A friendship can be strained or broken because of outside forces, such as political views that are occurring in the story’s plot. “Recitatif” by Toni Morrison shows that one’s race can put a strain on one’s friendship.
In the poem, Brooks uses literary devices such as connotation, tone, alliteration, rhymes, and repetition to give us a quick view into the rebellious lives of seven young boys who all seem to have one thing in common-- the struggle of social identity. She begins with this introduction to set the tone for the poem by giving the readers the setting; pool halls known for its dim lights, smoke, and alcohol.
The narrator within the poem perceives himself as superior to the subjects that he observes, and recognizes that they behave as savages due to the absence of rules and boundaries. They fail to acknowledge the error in their destructive behavior and continue to act with free will, which portrays human nature as wicked and unruly. One of them glanced at the narrator and insinuated that they were equals, which implies that the narrator also indulges in sinful behavior with the rest of them. Despite the narrator’s feeling of superiority, their actions reflect the same manner as those they view as beneath them. There exists a domino effect that causes the behavior of others to influence the nature of those surrounding them.
