J.D. Vance is untrusting to other people because of his mother abuse, his constant change in father figures, and his taught perception of the outside world. All of his mother’s choices effected Vance in some way but her maltreatment is one that really stood out in contributing to his untruthfulness in expressed regret. On top of her addiction, his mother also aloud men to come in and out of his life, including his biological and legal father which led to cautiousness of relationships. However, his mother wasn’t the only person to alter his perception of the outward society, his family also taught him to use violence as defense for not only his honor but his families.

Fortunately, there are honest people in our lives such as priests, parents, teachers etc. that help keep the world running smoothly; but even those people can make lousy choices. Christopher McCandless’s was a young wise man and stubborn guy that was intelligent he knew the right answers to respond which got himself out of things but also got himself into difficult situations that were not processed right. McCandless was raised in a upper middle class family in Annandale Virginia by parents Walt and Billie. He had eight siblings which one he was super close to named Carine and the rest were half siblings from his dads first marriage. Growing up Chris had a rough childhood with his parents problems and the affairs they had. McCandless would question himself why people would treat each other bad he would try to make a sense of the world.
The sinful Christian Mrs. Hopewell brandishes her religion to place herself as a judge of people as decent and respectable. She is a sinner herself despite her attempts to use her Christianity as a barrier. Mrs. Hopewell tells Manley: I think there aren’t enough good country people in the world! I think that’s what’s wrong with it… You don’t see any more real honest people unless you go way out in the country.

The first city that was considered the “shock city” was actually Manchester, England. It grew very quickly, and it was the world’s first industrialized city and the home of the cotton industry, cottonopolis - a metropolis centered on cotton trading. Same as Manchester, Chicago was also the “shock city” of North America because of its rapid growth. Both cities were industrial cities, Chicago rose from a struggling village sunk in the middle of a grassland creek to a metropolis city.
