Chris McCandless has been described in many words. Dependable. Intense. Passionate. Bullheaded. Every person who has the opportunity to meet Chris finds that he is many things. These people are drawn to him, yet, they know not how or why. It is questionable to many if Chris McCandless is someone to be remembered or someone for the Alaskan Bush to swallow whole. Many of the actions and decisions he made leave people speechless, yet full of questions. His personality traits played a large part in why he made the decisions he did. People with the personality type ENTJ tend to be logical, decisive, and outgoing, they solve problems with their head, and they feel at home in the world. Chris was very well known among his few friends for his insightful and radical conversations. One such quote from Krakauer’s novel includes “he was like that about everything. You aren’t supposed to think about heavy-duty stuff in high school. But I did, and he did, too, which is why we hit it off.” (Krakauer 113). Chris sees the possibilities of what the Alaskan bush can offer him. What finding himself in the wild could do if he made it out alive. Chris went to the wilds to find himself just as Henry Thoreau did and writes about in Walden “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived” (Thoreau). McCandless quickly learned of course, that the wilderness was much more intense then he had inherently anticipated. Intuitive people are typically open to new experiences. For McCandless, traveling to the west coast was no different, and as Chris was a fan of poets similar to Henry W. Longfellow who wrote The Psalm of Life. It is certainly possible that Chris could agree with the phrase: “Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time”. Chris McCandless is a Thinking type because he is headstrong and critical. However, no matter how critical he is “able to forgive, or overlook, the shortcomings of his literary heroes: Jack London a notorious drunk; Tolstoy, an enthusiastic sexual adventurer” (Krakauer 122). People of the Thinking preference are typically critical, and objective. An excerpt from the Psalm of Life reads: “Trust no Future, how’er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead! Act, -act in the living Present! Heart within, and God o’erhead!” (Longfellow). This passage can be interpreted to mean don’t trust the future even if it's pleasant, let the past stay in the past, but live in the present with God in your mind and your heart in your chest.
