Chris McCandless was a very intelligent young man who did very well in school. He was also an extremely hard worker and was ready for any obstacle or job in his way. I believe his love for nature is incredibly touching as well. Chris was brought up with a rough childhood and was still able to get out and live how he wanted. Chris being the intelligent and hardworking man who had a love for nature while growing up in a rough child environment gives me all the confidence to believe he is a sympathetic character. One quote that helps prove this is, “He reads a lot. He used a lot of big words. I think maybe part of what got him into trouble was that he did too much thinking.” Not too shortly after Chris left Emory University he decided to completely vanish from his peers and family, making this mature and in his eyes, “smart decision” he got himself into some trouble. After school, when he decided to leave on his journey to Alaska, he was able to meet new people and was fortunate enough to find some jobs along the way. One man he met was Wayne Westerburg, Wayne could tell that Chris was a little beaten and needed some help so he offered him a place to stay and a job at one of his grain elevators.
