Literary Elements Analysis: After reading and evaluating these five books of Chris Van Allsburg, there were connections and recurring ideas that I could make between these books. Of these connections found, there were numerous literary elements that Chris Van Allsburg used to draw the reader into the story to make his books more enjoyable and exciting for the reader. This use of narration is key to being able to understand the whole story surrounding Annie’s death-defying achievement. When the story gets into the mindset of Annie, the reader is able to see all that she is thinking as she is preparing and going on her adventure. For instance, as Annie was traveling down the Falls, the use of third person narration was key to seeing and feeling exactly how she was as she traveled down. “Inside the cold, wet barrel, though, Annie could feel only one thing: complete discombobulation” (Van Allsburg, Queen of the Falls, 2010, p. 23). Martinez, and Junko Yokota in their book Children’s Books in Children’s Hands, style is how the author says something in their book; it is the voice that you hear as you are reading the author’s book (Temple, Martinez, & Yokota, 2006, p. 41). Temple, Martinez, and Yokota also discuss in their book how good word choices in books are concrete and vivid and they create fresh images in the reader’s mind (Temple, Martinez, & Yokota, 2006, p. 42).
