Culture define who people are. Therefore, culture determines how the majority of the population acts, believes, and values. As a matter of fact, culture decides how a society views ideas. Furthermore, the religion the population follows is determined by culture. This is why there are differences between Christian and Muslim culture. The primary cause of conflict between Christians and Muslims though out history has been culture. Culture influences how people in a population view things. As a result, the media portrays how most of the population view things. For instance, Mala stated that, “Some people are afraid of ghosts, some of spiders or snakes-in those days we were afraid of our fellow human beings”. For instance, Muslim culture has a lot of rules compared to Christian culture. For example, Mala states, “Nowhere is it written in the Quran that a woman should be dependent on a man. The word has not come down from the heavens to tell us that every woman should listen to a man”. She states further, “We felt like the Taliban saw us as like little dolls to control, telling us what to do and how to dress”. The Muslim culture controls how their society treats women. As Malala said nowhere in the Quran does it say to treat women that way. Therefore, it is the cultures belief that believes to treat women that way. In a Christian culture, rules or standards Muslims have for women does not exist. As a result, it is not the religion causing the problems, culture influences people how to behave. Malala also states, “I was a girl in a land where rifles are fired in celebration of a son, while daughters are hidden away behind a curtain, their roles in life simply to prepare food and give birth to children”. This is different in a Christian culture where everyone is equal. This shows that Muslim praise boys more than girls. Furthermore, Malala talks about the Taliban not being the only murders. The media in every culture does not show the whole story, so people believe the stories that are half the truth. Furthermore, the religion most people follow is determined by the culture they are exposed to. The differences between Muslim and Christian culture also contributes to the conflict. For this reason, if people were more educated about the differences in culture they may be more understanding. The more people know of the other culture the more understanding people would have of why the two religions cultures are different.
