Christianity has a very interesting relationship with the Roman Empire. It alternated with being ignored and persecuted. Under Emperor Constantine, it became a legal religion. It very quickly became a dominant religion in the Eastern Roman Empire. Finally becoming the official state religion of the Roman Empire and most of its successors. It is also only because of the Roman Empire that Christianity could spread as far as it did. They Emperor’s persecution was strong enough to harden, but not break, the resolve of its followers. The infrastructure and lack of borders enabled its followers to move freely and spread the gospel to all corners of the Empire.
