Have you ever been to something first but the person who got second said they were first? This is what happened for the Native Americans when Christopher Columbus came. Christopher Columbus brought disease, made the population decrease, and burned people who didn’t convert to Catholicism. He was bad but he did bring the Columbian Exchange. Although we think of Christopher Columbus to be a great person he actually wasn't. He brought diseases to the Native Americans, he decreased the population of the Native Americans drastically, and he burned the Native Americans who didn’t want to convert to Catholicism. In the beginning, Christopher Columbus came to America and the Native Americans had a major decrease in population. This is why the numbers went down so drastically. Secondly, while the Native Americans were dealing with a decrease in population. They were also dealing with diseases. According to The Washington Post, “The Native Americans brought over measles.” Another disease that the Europeans brought over was smallpox(). Smallpox lasted 60 days and many people died(Doc. 2). Many people died because everybody had it so there was nobody to care for them(Doc. 2). That is another reason why the population plummeted. Finally, when Christopher Columbus came to the Americas he wanted everybody to convert to Catholicism. If the Native Americans didn’t convert to Catholicism the Europeans would burn them(OSU.EDU). Christopher Columbus didn’t think that the Native Americans had a religion(ChristianHistoryInstitute.com) Even though they were going to be burned, the Native Americans didn’t want to convert to Catholicism(OI). This is the final reason why the Native Americans population decreased
