I believe that Columbus is a hero since he kinda figured about America. I believe that he figured our America since if he never sailed there no one wouldn't had known that America existed. One of these accomplishments was introducing the Old World to the Americas while changing history, according to the Columbian Exchange packet. The Vikings did come to the Americas hundreds of years earlier, but they didn’t introduce all of the Old World to the Americas. Columbus, on the other hand, caused trade and interaction to occur between the two unfamiliar parts of the world. Another major accomplishment of Columbus was to be able to take several trips back and forth from Europe while bringing very precious materials, such as gold, back to Spain. Columbus did whatever he could to get his hands onto these items, and when he brought them to Spain, they had a great amount of value.
During my younger years of education, I was taught and deeply believed that Christopher Columbus was a hero. This belief was established as a reality in not only my mind, but the minds of many young public school students, through indoctrinated textbooks. We were taught to associate Christopher Columbus’s name with conquest, heroism, and discovery, similar to how Kenneth Burke describes the chickens who identified with food whenever they heard a specific bell. We had acquired several meanings for his name, similar to the word cloud below. The idea that Christopher Columbus discovered a new land, educated “ignorant savages,” and bravely fought for a new world became a reality for myself and others.
Christopher Columbus is a man who is commonly depicted as a hero and great explorer who discovered our modern day America, but many of the so called “facts” are not all completely true as people would like to believe. Columbus was undoubtedly a courageous explorer who brought many new ideas, cultures, and resources to be exchanged between the New World and Europe. While this is true, it is not uncommon for people to forget the harmful effects brought along with the voyages made by Columbus and the darker details of his times in America. Columbus started from humble middle class family. Columbus was born in 1451 in the Republic of Genoa as the oldest of his four siblings.
Do you believe that we should celebrate Columbus Day as a national holiday? Do you believe he is a hero? or a Villain? Some people have different points of view when it comes to a question like this; sometimes, their opinion may reflect their religious beliefs or because of all the terrible acts against humanity in the New World. We also do have to remember that he did discover America; he started the Columbian Exchange, and brought many different values to this new world he just discovered. Even though I believe that he is a hero and we should celebrate him through a national holiday, I want to give you a chance to decide whether you think he is a hero or a Villain and choose if we should celebrate him as a national holiday.
And that is why I am grateful to have learned many details that shine the light on the way that Christopher Columbus actually was like, a villain. I have my reasons for considering Columbus a villain. For example Because of him there is much less diversity in animals. And if that wasn’t bad enough he is also the reason why there are very few native americans left.
Finally, an achievement as an explorer that has made him famous that might make him appear to be a hero for certain people is all of his efforts to spread Christianity. He voyaged across the globe to spread new religious ideas and to possibly convert people. One failure that might qualify Columbus as a villain is his cruel mistreatment towards the native people of the island that he discovered. He abused the power he was given by using it against the native people, the Tainos. Another failure as an explorer that has made him infamous that might make him appear to be a villain is destroying the unique culture and tradition of the native people.
Almost everybody has heard of Christopher Columbus, but do you know that he tried to sail for 15 years. Christopher Columbus found new land, was a good navigator, and never gave up. Some say Christopher Columbus was a hero because he was the explorer that discovered America. In reality, Christopher Columbus had an incredibly negative impact on the world because he enslaved the Native Americans, didn’t help the kind Natives when they got infected by diseases that the Spaniards had brought to America, and killed off most of the Native American population. The tactics he chose to use were violent and destructive by the standards back then and now. First, Columbus treated the Native Americans like uncivilized people by enslaving them and forcing them to work for him although they greeted him and his crew peacefully. ” They could make fine servants,”(document 2) he wrote in his journal,”I took them by force.
