Argumentative Essay: The Voices Rising

Many people believe that as we advance as a society, problems that used to plague us all are simply going away. That, sadly, is not the truth. The “Voices Rising” exhibit is a powerful one. It is a display of all the controversial topics we are facing in today’s society: LGBT+ rights, police brutality, unequal distribution of wealth, women’s rights, and others. Each topic is laid out on a block, accompanied by pictures, quotes, and facts about each topic. For a few topics, snapshots from today are juxtaposed with ones from decades ago to show the seriousness of what is occurring today. There is no lack of disabling problems, and this exhibits exposes the sheer amount of them. I believe the purpose of this exhibit is to educate those who do not realize what is happening in society, and provoke conversation about the problems to start the revolution that so desperately needs to happen. …show more content…

Gender inequality spurred a hefty discussion, and for a good reason. Women are discriminated against in the media, politics, and the workplace, while men have countless advantages in every aspect of society (Eitzen, Zinn, Smith 223). Some will argue that there are not racial issues that still occur today. They believe the topic has been exhausted, and that there is nothing left to change. Naturally, these arguments are made by whites who have no idea what discrimination means. We learned in class that racism is still alive and thriving.
