Being the first two well-known places in which the English would set out to colonize in 1607 and 1620, Jamestown, Virginia and Plymouth, Massachusetts hold very separate set of beliefs, standards, and outlooks on life then and the future to come. While paving the way for things such as slavery, taxes, ownership of land, inclusion of women, tobacco and government assemblies, John Smith and the people of Jamestown became a classical foundation for new life and economic growth for the new world that is, the United States. On the other hand, William Bradford and his people began to realize the intentions of the Church of England were unholy and had strayed away from God’s teachings from the Bible. With this in mind, the Pilgrims set on a voyage to the new world to seek religious freedom. As we know it, the Pilgrims sought for peace and a new way of living that was fair, just and free from religious corruptions.
They were puritans who were constrained by English laws and customs and sought a new place to freely practice religion how they wanted. With no King James there in America to restrict them, the colonists were free to do this. Church was the most revered part of society there in Plymouth. “The important thing was their spiritual life,” and they continued to keep close ties with their minister in Leiden John Robinson until his death. After his death “a profound sense of sadness settled over the Plymouth church.”.

In the year 1492 there was a man name Christopher Columbus traveling around the sea when all of the sudden he found land soon to be called America. In America this trip is celebrated with Columbus Day. Americans should not celebrate Columbus Day because Columbus murdered and cruel native Americans. Columbus killed Native Americans with dogs, fire, and smallpox. Columbus was cruel to Native Americans the things he did was cut off their hands, made them slaves, and raped the Native women.
The colonists wanted religious freedom. One reason they originally left England was to escape the Catholic Church. Some called themselves Puritans. They wanted the church and the state to be more separate.

While this is true, it is not uncommon for people to forget the harmful effects brought along with the voyages made by Columbus and the darker details of his times in America. Thanksgiving Myths Did the first official thanksgiving take place near Plymouth Rock in 1621? This is the myth that I chose for this paragraph. Well, I think the English colonists we call Pilgrims celebrated days of thanksgiving as parts of their religion, but these were days of prayer, not days of feasting. The original feast in 1621 occurred sometime between September 21 and November 11. Unlike our modern holiday, it was three days long.

Today, families celebrate Thanksgiving in different ways that are more modern and fit their lifestyle. One thing that some families do that is similar is eat common Thanksgiving foods.
Thanksgiving Day is an annual national holiday marked by religious observances and a traditional meal including turkey and is held in the U.S. on the fourth Thursday in November. I personally think it's neat how people celebrate Thanksgiving. Some people celebrate it the same, while others celebrate it differently.
