Christopher Colombus
Christopher Columbus was an explorer and navigator from Italy. He was born into a middle-class family on October 31, 1951 in Genoa Italy. His father, Domenico Columbus, was a wool weaver. His mother’s name was Susanna Fontanarossa. Christopher had three brothers and one sister. In 1473 he took his first job as an apprentice and a business agent for some of the families in his home town.
Columbus spent much of the 1470s trading. He visited many places such as Northern Europe, Iceland and England. In 1479 Christopher moved to Lisbon where he met his brother, and got married to Filipa moniz Perestrelo. Eventually King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella from Spain agreed to his voyages. He then left to explore Asia under the promise to bring spices from China. On August 3, 1492 Columbus set sail in with three ships the, Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria alongside 104 men.
After a brief supply run to the Canary Islands and five weeks of travel, many of his men had died from hunger or disease. On October 14th of the same year land was spotted by one of Columbus’s men; he named it San Salvador. In November the crew reached Cuba and Hispaniola. The Pinta and its crew were left to explore here while the other two ships continued for China. In December 1492 the Santa Maria wrecked off the coast of Hispaniola. The following March Columbus returned to Spain to complete his first voyage.
Christopher set off on his second voyage during September of 1493 with 17 ships and nearly 1200 men. He set off toward the west with the purpose gaining colonies for Spain and search the far East. In November of that year the crew discovered the Dominican, Guadeloupe, and Jamaican islands. After that Columbus went to check on the crew he originally left to colonize HIspaniola. When Columbus and his crew arrived they discovered that their Fort had been destroyed. After fighting a there battle in 1495 columbus named the new Colony Santo Domingo and conquered the island.
