Christopher Columbus DBQ Essay Christopher Columbus sailed the sea for miles. The year was 1492 when Columbus and his crew set sail towards East Asia to find a new trade route with the west indies. After many years of finding a country to fund his voyage finally the Spanish government agreed to fund his trip. Months later Columbus landed on what he thought was East Asia but then discovered that he landed in the Bahamas. After this grand discovery Christopher Columbus was named a hero by many but a hero must be a courageous person that demonsted good deeds and inspired others, but Christopher Columbus was not a hero but instead a villain that claimed he started a new civilization.
Christopher Columbus was one of the greatest explorers known to man. Columbus had many different reasons for his explorations. Later, the main reason for his explorations was selfishness. Just like many other explorers before Columbus, he wanted land, he wanted power, and he also wanted gold. The reason for his very first voyage to what he thought was India, but later was found out to be Central America, was to get land for Spain.
Many people when they were younger, including myself, were taught that Columbus is a hero and an amazing person who discover the New World. We were all told that Columbus’s purpose for sailing thousands of miles across the Atlantic was to come here in search of undiscovered land. In fourteen ninety two, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue to find the world of new. Though the History books have a preconceived idea that he was a benevolent adventurer, Bartolome De Las Casas proclaims Columbus’ interactions differently. De Las Casas described several events during Columbus’ encounter with the Native Americans. Columbus demoralized the Native Americans by regarding them as subhumans, disintegrated their families, and committed mass murders. What the textbooks fail to include are the immoralities that could possibly shed a new light on your perspective of Christopher Columbus.
