Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who is best known for his four voyages in discovering Americas during the Renaissance period. The period between the middle ages and the modern era and marked the beginning of western civilization. Certain aspects of the period allowed the success of Columbus voyage as discussed below. The renaissance period was branded as “the age of exploration” where there was increasing desire to explore the world including the universe; sea routes, new colonies and other colonies. The growth of trade and frenzy for money during the renaissance period significantly favored Columbus voyage. This is because, finding trade routes was one of the reasons why the King agreed to fund his trips. Additionally, the King allowed him because he was going to find gold which would be translated to money for the King. Religion is also an important aspect of renaissance that made Columbus voyage possible. His main driving factor to sail to the islands was to spread Christianity and find Gold to fund a crusade to help get Jerusalem back from the Muslims. Men pursued success both for their own fame and fortune as well as for the glory of God. Columbus was driven to a large extent by the pride that would come from the success of his voyage and the glory of the ‘title’ that he requested to be accorded upon his return. He was also driven by the fact that through his mission he would convert many natives to Christianity. Other aspects of renaissance that favored his voyage include spread of knowledge/ideas.
