In July of 2014, Christopher F. Butt plead guilty to one count of sexual assault and uttering threats after callously raping an 11-year old girl, leaving her severely injured, as well Butt threatened her and her family if she ever told anyone of what he had done. For four continuous weeks Butt had taken the young girl to his home, sexually assaulted her, which resulted in her being unable to walk or sit down for days and even causing breakage to her genitalia. Butt was sentenced to five years, but got 1,194 days off his sentence and is set to be released in under a year. In 2015, 24 year old Derek Saretzky plead not guilty to three counts of first degree murder, but in a recent video statement, Saretzky confessed to the three murders as well …show more content…
The choice of what to include in each article plays a role in how the public perceives each crime, the crimes of; rape and a triple murder can to some degree causes moral panic and shock in an individual as it shows the inhumanness within people and ultimately these crimes attract more viewers, therefore they use how they present it to their advantage. The media also puts great emphasis on the actions of the criminal, these criminals exude psychopathic tendencies, and it is likely that this can derive the readers attention from the victim and focus more of the choices and characteristics of the perpetrator. In both cases one of the victims is a young girl which ultimately causes more attention for that sole reason. A murder would be seen as wrong and inhumane, society recognizes the atrocity and it is not accepted in society as it is the taking of another individuals life, innocent or not it is never a just act. Society believes that the person who committed the crime should be brought to justice and face the consequences of their actions. On the other hand, rape is viewed a little differently, and it is somewhat problematic. Society has many different views on rape and this is due to different communities of people having their own perception of rape and what causes it. For some, they view it as the victims fault for reasons such as clothing and their actions, and other times it is viewed as the rapists fault because of their need to be in-control have power over others and for the reason that it is a sexual crime. There is also a third view of rape which blames neither the victim nor the rapist but society itself, and this is because there is belief that social norms have an affect on an individuals understanding of what is acceptable. Society also recognizes the consequences of the crime and decides whether they feel the criminal was brought to justice and if not, it can affect the publics view and trust in the justice
