Once Christopher McCandless stepped foot in the wild, he never knew what was coming for him. Straight out of college, McCandless knew exactly what he wanted to do: he wanted to travel the country and see where his adventure would take him. Along the way, on his journey, Chris made some good friends, gaining a few jobs and encountered a little trouble from mother nature. From almost dying of dehydration in the Mojave desert, to practically being swept away in the teklanika river while trying to get back to civilization. Chris was an honors student and made it onto the dean's list. When his schooling came to an end “He indicated that he was planning another extended trip but implied that he’d visit his family in Annandale before hitting the road.” (Krakauer 125). Then, McCandless was off on his journey, making stops in places like California and New Mexico. While on his adventure on his own, he met some special people. Even though he met some amazing people, he did not stay in contact with them for very long. Once he left the area where they had lived, he never really spoke to them again. Picking up and leaving jobs as he went. He never stayed in one place for a while. On one of the trips that McCandless had taken, his car gotten flooded by the Arizona river, and he was unable to retrieve it. Because of that instance, he had to travel on foot, and abandon the only possession of his that he really had left. During McCandless’ freshman summer of college, he had decided to take a trip out to the Mojave desert. When McCandless came back home, and was going back to college, he was all skin and bones. He looked like death was about to pounce on him because of lack of water. When McCandless wanted to cross the Teklanika River he could not because of the melting of all the snow nearby. All of the snow had melted off of the mountains and runoff into the river. It took a lot of guts for McCandless to want to cross back over the overflowing river.
